Ben's Allergy & Restaurant Reviews

Zaxby’s: Does it Deal Well With Allergies?

December 11, 2023 by Ben

Zaxby’s Allergen Menu: https://www.zaxbys.com/uploads/Zaxbys_Nutrition_trifold_2022_P3_web_83a6cecd01_rotated_215301d30f.pdf

I live in Ohio (30 minutes away from Columbus, OH) and I don’t have a Zaxby’s nowhere nearby. The closest Zaxby’s is in Kentucky. Though I hope they will expand to Ohio someday. I have only had Zaxby’s twice once in Chattanooga, TN and Fort Myers, FL.

Wings

Food Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: The meat was really juicy and I can tell that it was fresh! I really enjoyed eating my wings either the boneless or the traditional wings should be really good for anyone looking for a bite to eat if you reside in an area where a Zaxby’s is within a driving distance. I remember eating there while I was on vacation.

Allergy Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Rationale: Not good for vegans, if you’re a vegan you can always get a salad, as Zaxby’s does offer salads (Zalads) on their menu. Gluten-Free people should stay away from the boneless wings but the traditional wings are gluten-free so that is an option as well for gluten-free people.

Fries

Food Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: The fries had some sort of seasoning on that wasn’t salt, but it was honestly really good and it made it unique from any other french fry I have ever had. It was fresh and I honestly really liked it.

Allergy Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: There is no allergens present for these delicacies. Seems like 5 stars is the only answer, right?

Texas Toast

Food Rating: 5 stars out of 5 stars

Rationale: Every Texas Toast I have known has had dairy in it, but Zaxby’s is the exception and that is what I crave the most about this place is the Texas Toast. True story I visited my Aunt and Uncle in Florida and we went to a Fort Myers Mighty Mussels baseball game in the middle of June. So it was super hot. I online ordered Zaxby’s and I quickly ate my wings and fries, but I ordered myself some Texas Toast and it sat in the car for the remainder of the baseball games (we came in on a doubleheader day), it was 5 hours worth of baseball at least. We had no idea there was a double header so we came in the middle of the first game. But it was fresh when I got in the car and I ate it on the way to my Aunt and Uncle’s house. It was really good even after sitting in the Florida sun for hours. Highly recommend this item for anyone that can eat it (sorry gluten-free people).

Allergy Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: The fact that there is a restaurant that serves dairy-free Texas Toast blows my mind! I’m so thankful to have eaten the Texas Toast. That is enough for me to put this amazing piece of bread as 5 stars for thinking about not putting dairy in the Texas Toast!

Allergy Rating of Restaurant: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: They do amazing with allergies and I was pretty happy every time I have been there. Every time I see a Zaxby’s I want to pull over and eat at one. Like with every restaurant there is a possibility of cross-contamination, but I have been pleased with the quality of food and no allergic reactions. That is what I look for every time I eat food, and I’m trying to help you do the same.

Wingstop: Is it Worth It?

December 11, 2023 by Ben

Wingstop Allergen Menu: https://www.wingstop.com/allergens

Wingstop Tenders and Wings for a Big Dairy-Free Win

I have only had Wingstop once. I tried to go another time but I had to online order ahead of time and I couldn’t dine in or take it to go. This was because of the COVID pandemic, luckily they opened up their restaurant more and I was able to order at the restaurant and take it to go and ate it in my friend’s truck. We just went to Bowlero Lanes on Sawmill Road. This is in Columbus, Ohio by the way. The Wingstop was right next to the bowling alley so it was a short drive luckily.

Wings

Food Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: I really enjoyed eating here. The wings were juicy and delicious. I was legitimately really happy with these wings and I can’t complain about the food quality. I get the wings plain because I really don’t like having any sauce on my wings. I am kind of picky when it comes to my chicken. I don’t like it stringy and I like to have no sauce. Though if I am forced to choose a sauce that is dairy-free I’ll eat it because there is nothing else to eat.

Allergy Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Rationale: Really the only people who shouldn’t eat this is gluten-free people, vegans, and people who have soy allergies. Wingstop does a great job to make sure the allergens are labeled very clearly. If you have an allergy please check the links at the top to make sure you’re getting food that is free of your allergen.

Fries

Food Rating; 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: The fries had a really good seasoning to it, and I personally enjoyed eating them. You can easily taste the seasoning on the fries and I really enjoyed eating them. I highly recommend you order fries if you’re looking for good tasting food.

Allergy Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Rationale: Their website doesn’t guarantee that they’re gluten-free, and the oil the fries are in contains soy, so people with soy allergies should avoid eating them.

Allergy Review of Restaurant: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: I thought Wingstop made lots of precautions and took allergies very seriously. They have every allergen labeled in a simple form on their website. It is extremely easy to identify what you can and can’t eat. The only part that could be improved is having options for vegans, gluten-free people, and people who are allergic to soy. For me being allergic to dairy, I loved it! There were so many options. I can get the wings, chicken tenders, and the chicken sandwich, and I will definitely come back and eat it again.

How Does Wendy’s Deal with Allergies?

December 11, 2023 by Ben

Wendy’s Allergen Menu: https://www.wendys.com/nutrition-allergens

I have always eaten at Wendy’s as a kid and still eat Wendy’s today as an adult. Wendy’s have fresh and quality food and they have plenty of dairy-free options for me to eat their safely. I did have an allergic reactions because Wendy’s put cheese in the cheeseburger, but I take fault for that because I just ate my sandwich and didn’t check it before I ate it. I ended up puking the burger, and I took one singular bite and the allergic reaction came on immediately, as a warning be careful and make sure the order is communicated to the workers and always double check the workers because the workers aren’t always aware of food allergies, but if you share this article to anyone who works at Wendy’s or food service that would be awesome. Because I don’t want anyone to experience what I experience and I want as many people in food service to be aware of the severity of food allergies and making sure they know how to prepare food safely for people with food allergies, that is why I started this company is to bridge the gap and educate everyone about the severity of food allergies.

Wendy’s does have an allergen menu. Though it is unique. If you go on their website and order online you can click the menu and click the item in question and it tells you what allergens in contains. Which is really cool, and it gives you all the details and ingredients for each item, which is really cool and unique. I know if you sit-in you can find an allergen menu posted on a board somewhere in the store, but you can go online and make sure you’re good to go.

Burgers

Food Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Rationale: I have always enjoyed the burgers here and have really enjoyed it with the bacon especially if the bacon is crispy and I would highly recommend eating Wendy’s burgers if you are looking for a good burger. Their buns are pretty good too and will not disappoint you. The breakfast baconator was good too I would highly recommend eating their burgers for breakfast too.

Allergy Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Rationale: Burgers are very customizable and you can get it with or without the bun, the only people who wouldn’t like this are vegans and vegetarians. Though they know not to eat these, They would definetlely enjoy the salad more.

Chicken

Food Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Rationale: There are lots of options for me to eat chicken, I normally get the orignal chicken nuggets, but I do enjoy their chicken sandwiches (grilled or fried) and I also had their spicy nuggets as well. Lots of different chicken options and when it is fresh it is really good. I don’t have too many complaints about Wendy’s chicken as I find it to be really good and would highly recommend eating it.

Allergy Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Rationale: Gluten-Free people won’t be able to enjoy this, but they can get the grilled chicken without the bun, or opt for a bunless burger. Sandwiches are really customizable and they would be fine, but Wendy’s doesn’t have gluten-free chicken nuggets, so those are the two options I would recommend people with gluten sensitivities.

Fries/Baked Potato

Food Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: I love how they use sea-salt on their fries, and they are well-salted every-time and I would highly recommend eating the fries everytime. You can customize it, I put chili on my fries and I have also added bacon fries. There are many more custimization options like Ghost Pepper, Pub, and cheese fries as well. Most fast food restaurants don’t have that many customization options and that is why it is five stars. My Parents always get me a baked potato whenever I am sick or can’t even anything hard, it is always nice to have that option as it isn’t offered at any other fast food place.

Allergy Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: It’s fries and baked potatoes, one of the most allergy-friendly foods you can find unless you put dairy (butter) or peanut oil, in them. Luckily Wendy’s doesn’t have any of that.

Chili

Food Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Rationale: I enjoy the chili alot it is good on fries and it is good in the winters when it is cold and you need something warm.

Allergy rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Rationale: minus the beef that takes out the vegans and vegetarians, I don’t know what else would be in chili that someone would be allergic too.

Allergy Review on the Restaurant as a whole:

3 out of 5 stars

Rationale: I have had some allergic reactions at Wendy’s, but it was my fault, though the workers could’ve made the order correctly, but I need to check and check again to see if it is dairy-free or not. Getting lazy and not checking is what can kill you, and you definetely don’t want to loosely eat stuff here because it can happen if you’re not careful, since most people don’t think about food allergies, with that being said, I think Wendy’s does a great job of putting their stuff on the website, you can check the allergy stuff and order it at the same time, I do like Wendy’s concept, plus. they’re plenty of options when it comes to ordering food that is allergy-free. They don’t have many vegan options, though I do remember they had a black bean burger at one point, but I didn’t see it on their online menu, so I really don’t know what happened and why it disappeared. Overall, I would recommend eating at Wendy’s.

White Castle: Is it Good?

December 11, 2023 by Ben

White Castle Allergen Menu: https://www.whitecastle.com/pdfs/nutrition/White-Castle-Ingredient-List.pdf

Food Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Rationale: I love the mini hamburgers and I really enjoyed them. The sliders reminded me of Steak & Shake and Burger King’s mini hamburgers (Steak & Shake & BK have discontinued them unfortunately) I have only had White Castle once and I would go back again! The Crinkle fries and they were pretty good as well!

Allergy Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Rationale: I really enjoyed how they labeled each item ingredient by ingredient! I have had no allergic reactions eating here! I would highly recommending that you do try this place!

Texas Roadhouse: Is it Worth It?

December 10, 2023 by Ben

Texas Roadhouse Allergen Menu: https://www.nutritionix.com/texas-roadhouse/menu/special-diets/premium

I remember eating at one when I was a kid once in Indiana. I ate steak bites and fries and I really enjoyed them. My hometown of Marysville, Ohio just got a franchise a couple of years ago and I still really like the place.

Fried Catfish

Food Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: It is always hot and fresh and I really enjoy eating this food. It is one of my favorite seafood dishes that I can get at any restaurant. Plus it had some crunch to it.

Allergy Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Rationale: If you’re allergic to fish you already know that you shouldn’t get the fried catfish because it contains fish. It also contains gluten, soy, and eggs. I didn’t know it contained eggs, but I had no allergic reaction. I’m allergic to prodominately egg products like scrambled eggs, but I can have eggs baked into something like the catfish breading or a cake and I’ll be fine. There are a lot of allergies in this food item, but if you can eat it, I do recommend you try it.

Steak Fries

Food Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: This food compliments the fried catfish perfectly! It is fresh and it is overall an amazing fry, I highly recommend eating these fries.

Allergy Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Rationale: The steak fries surprisingly contain fish, gluten, and soy. Most fries are really allergy free. I’m still thrown off by the steak fries having fish in it. I personally don’t understand why you would put fish in fries, but that might just be me. I feel your pain if you have a fish allergy.

Allergy Rating of the Restaurant: 3 out of 5 stars

Rationale: I remember one time eating here, they put some cheese on my catfish, it wasn’t that much, but you do got to check your food and make sure your allergen hasn’t been cross contaminated. Luckily they fixed my order and made it right, and that is why I can’t stress the importance of communicating to your waiter/waitress. The fish in the fries is a big strike for them, it excludes people with fish allergies other than that, I would recommend you eat at Texas Roadhouse, I have always got my food hot and fresh and the likelihood of you getting the same is pretty high.

What Do I normally get at Subway?

December 4, 2023 by Ben

Food Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

I love to get the Artisan Italian (white bread) with steak, bacon, green peppers, lettuce, and spinach. I also have gotten the grilled chicken with the same toppings. I also order Lays Baked potato chips on the side, I can get a bottle of water or a Gatorade. When it is hot and fresh it is a fantastic sub and I really enjoy it, but I have personally had some cold subs when they weren’t supposed to be cold. It depends on the location of the Subway. If you get a good Subway you’ll have a good, hot, and fresh sandwich and I really do recommend Subway. The only thing I wish Subway had was french fries. I would love to see Subway add fries, that would make me want to eat there more often because I am a french fry connoisseur.

Allergen Review of Entire Restaurant: 4 out of 5 Stars

They have plenty of updated allergen menus available on Google, you may need to scroll a little bit but Subway does take their customers with allergies seriously. Like it says on Subway’s allergen menu please notify the person preparing your sandwich that you have food allergies. I would go a step further and ask them to change their gloves and wash their hands. You don’t want to to get sick, and I understand not wanting to inconvience the employee, but you do need to be very careful about allergies because they can cross contiminate products and be careful they use different utensials as well. Though I can’t remember having an allergic reaction ever. I have been eating at Subway for a long time and I have been safe eating there. Again I highly recommend Subway to anyone who has allergies. Gluten-Free people can get the meats or veggies in a bowl so they can eat their and be just fine.

Steak n’ Shake: Is It Worth It?

December 4, 2023 by Ben

Steak n’ Shake Allergy Menu: https://cos-steak-n-shake.s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/april-2020/SNS_Ingredients_Allergens.pdf

Food Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Rationale: I really enjoyed the fact that they had mini-steak burgers. The buns were dairy-free and everything was fine. The big steakburgers have dairy in their bun. You can get the steakburgers without the bun, but I’m not gluten-free and I would prefer to have a bun. I love their steak franks (their buns are dairy-free). Unfortunately it gave me an upset stomach (hot dogs can make my stomach upset) but I did enjoy the meal. They have really good fries as well. I really do enjoy their food a lot.

Allergy Rating of Entire Restaurant: 4 out of 5 stars

Rationale: I do like how they include the buns in their allergen menu and go ingredient by ingredient. Unfortunately there isn’t a whole lot of options for vegans. I am limited at this place, there is a lot of items that have dairy here. If you can find allergy-friendly food I do recommend eating here. They have really good food, but sometimes it is hard to find allergy-friendly food. Go check it out!

The Honest Truth about Sonic and how they deal with Allergies

December 4, 2023 by Ben

Sonic Allergen Menu Link: https://online.sonicdrivein.com/nutrition/allergens.pdf?v=01-2023https://www.godairyfree.org/dining-out/sonic-drive-in-dairy-free-menu

Sonic truly is my favorite fast-food place of all-time, whenever I’m by a Sonic I always have the urge to go. I love this place it has plenty of dairy-free options for me to enjoy.

Jumbo Popcorn Chicken

Food Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: I love the crunchiness of the popcorn chicken and it is so good whenever I eat it. It is always juicy and hot off the fryer, and I really enjoy eating it.

Allergy Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Rationale: Gluten-Free people should definetely stay away from this as well as vegans. It luckily has no dairy in it so I can enjoy it.

Onion Rings

Food Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: Really good! These are freshed served off the fryer like the popcorn chicken is. I come to Sonic just for these Onion Rings. That should tell you all you need to know.

Allergy Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

Rationale: I know you would think that it would be higher but there has been some controversy with this item. I found out that the Onion Rings have dairy. Both allergen links that I posted above say that they do have dairy in it. Though I have been recently and had no allergic reaction. I’m anaphalatic to dairy and I should’ve had some sort of reaction if I had any reaction. In addition gluten-free people and I would advise vegans to stay away from this as well. I loved their onion rings, I’m bummed they changed their recipe, it was good while it lasted.

Tots/Fries

Food Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Rationale: I would say their fries and tots are pretty good! I haven’t had them in a long time since I get their Onion rings all the time, but with the onion rings having dairy in it, I must turn to either the fries or the tots, personally these are both really good options and I am not complaining about either one. I have seen frozen Sonic Tater Tots at my local Walmart, and if retail grocery stores are selling them that means their food is really good, and I agree sonic has great food.

Allergy Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: There are no allergens to be reported, be careful of cross contimination of other fried items with food allergens present.

Philly Steak

Food Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: I had this item once at a Pennyslvania Sonic. I was visiting family on my Mom’s side and I remember enjoying that sandwich! The good news about sonic is that it tells you item by item like the bun and the steak if it has certain allergens in it on their allergen menu. That is a plus instead of them telling the sandwich and leaving you confused and wondering if I can be flexible with this food item. I recommend this item right here!

Allergy Rating: 4 out of 5 stars: Vegans should stay away from this item, Gluten-free people can enjoy it without the bun. This is allergy friendly because of the flexibility of the sandwich!

Allergy Rating of Restaurant: 4 out of 5 stars

I really like how they take care of their customers with allergies. They have an allergen menu broken by items and they update it fairly frequently too, so that has made it safer. Thank God I didn’t have a reaction. I should’ve checked before I ate it, but luckily nothing happened. Restaurants changing their recipes is dangerous for people with allergies and that is why you should be careful. Sonic did its due diligence and let me know that they do have dairy in it, and Sonic hasn’t caused me any allergic reactions so that is why I declare Sonic as an allergy-friendly place.

Red Lobster: Is it Worth It?

December 4, 2023 by Ben

Red Lobster Allergen Menu: https://www.redlobster.com/nutrition-tools/food-allergy-wizard/

I remember eating Red Lobster while I was in high school a couple of times, but I haven’t had it for a while and I really don’t remember what entree I ate. I don’t know why that is. The only thing I might remember is the fries, and I thought the fries were good enough for me, I didn’t complain about them. I want to go back and eat it again! I just don’t have it often because there isn’t one in my hometown of Marysville, Ohio. If I were ordering food I would get the chicken tenders and fries. Though they have fish and steak that I would consider ordering with my fries as well. There are options for me that are dairy-free. If I were you I would look into the allergy menu wizard and type in your allergies and it will show you what foods are friendly towards your allergy.

Allergy Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: When I ate here, I had no allergic reactions. They have an easy to use allergy menu on their website. They took my allergy really seriously. I highly recommend you try it out if you’re on the fence. If you communicate your allergy you won’t have any problems eating here. It is definitely worth a try!

Pizza Hut: The Truth about Their Handling of Allergies

December 4, 2023 by Ben

Pizza Hut Allergen Menu: https://www.nutritionix.com/pizza-hut/menu/special-diets/premium?desktop

I will personally say that I started eating Pizza Hut since high school. I was searching for dairy-free pizza places and I found Pizza Hut to be very safe and effective. I have not had an allergic reaction since I have been eating there. I do wish they didn’t put dairy in the icing of the Cinnamon Sticks because they changed the recipe while I started eating there, the cinnamon sticks were really good! That is the only thing I did wish Pizza Hut would’ve not done, but everything else has been good.

Wings

Food Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: Every time I have had the wings (boneless or traditional) I have been pleased to tell you that it is worth. The meat is juicy and I really enjoyed the breading and I thought they were hot and fresh! I would say these wings are defenetely worth a try!

Allergy Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Rationale: Gluten-Free people should stay away. Good news for Gluten-Free people is that Pizza Hut has a Gluten-Free crust and I would recommend you go to that. I have never had the crust myself, but if I were a betting man, I would say it would be good.

Pizza

Food Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: I love the Pan Pizza! It is my favorite, though most of the time I get hand tossed or thin & crispy. Pan Pizza costs more money, so that is the only unfortunate thing! They had toppings to cover the pizza, it felt like you had the right amount of toppings!

Allergy Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: Anyone can customize the pizza the way they want to here. With the Pizza Hut having a Gluten-Free crust truly anyone can enjoy pizza here!

Fries

Food Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Rationale: It was a really nice fry and I really enjoyed it! Not to mention it was hot and fresh too!

Allergy Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Rationale: They have a coating on the fries that contains Gluten! But for everyone else I highly recommend you trying Pizza Hut’s French Fries.

Cinnamon Sticks

Food Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Rationale: When Pizza Hut didn’t have dairy in their icing this was a 5 star food, but since they decided to put dairy in their icing, that made me take a star away from this food item. If they bring back the old dairy-free icing I will change my mind and put it back to five stars (maybe they changed it back without my notice). I like that they’re fresh and I like the cinnamon is just the right amount, but I will have to buy icing at the store if I want icing, so it isn’t an entirely big deal, but it is annoying that it comes with icing that has dairy in it, luckily it hasn’t spilled while transporting home (that would be a disaster for me)!

Allergy Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Rationale: In addition to the icing having dairy in it, Gluten-Free people should not eat this and it also contains soy. If you have a soy allergy you shouldn’t be eating this as well.

Allergy Rating of the Entire Restaurant: 5 out of 5 Stars

Rationale: They make sure they change their gloves and use separate utensials from my experience at least. They take care of people with allergies. There is someone who works at the Pizza Hut in Marysville, Ohio that has a dairy allergy and knows the precautions to take. If you have another allergy you will be likely to be treated the same as I was, so I would definetely eat at this location and hopefully other Pizza Huts do the same. I got Pizza Hut in Pennyslvania and Mount Vernon, Ohio and didn’t have any allergic reactions so I think it is pretty safe across the board.
